Della J. Lewis

Della J. Lewis, age 94, of Madison, died Monday, November 20, 2017, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Madison. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 25, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church near Ramona. Burial will follow lunch and fellowship at the Winfred Cemetery. The family will be present from 6-8 PM, Friday, at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison.

Della Jean Fischer was born June 21, 1923, the daughter of Arthur and Frieda (Lebahn) Fischer on the family farm near Junius. Della attended Pulford Country School, graduating from the 8th grade before working on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Desmond Lewis on September 28, 1949, at St. John Lutheran Church near Ramona, SD. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage.

Desmond and Della made their home on the farm in Winfred before moving into Madison in 1971. She held various jobs including cooking at Lefty’s Bar in Winfred, housekeeping at Lake Park Motel, cooking at Dino’s Café, and working in the Dietary Department at the Madison Community Hospital where she retired.

Although retired, Della could often be found cooking at home for her children and grandchildren. Della’s best dishes included meatloaf, meatballs, and refrigerator casserole. If anyone asked for the recipe her response was, “a little of this and some of that”. She enjoyed bingo and traveling with Desmond to Texas, Wisconsin, and Canada. Della always enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Rick (Carol) Lewis of Springfield, MO, Alan (Kathie) Lewis of Madison, Arlen (Pam) Lewis of Wentworth, and Todd Lewis of Madison; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Marilyn Lang of Barronett, WI; sisters-in-law Martha Fischer, Linda Fischer, and Mary Fischer; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Desmond in 2010; 4 brothers, Lloyd, Duane, Marvin, and David Fischer.
