Elva Witt, age 100, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Madison, SD, died Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Inurnment will follow at the Graceland Cemetery in Madison.
Elva G. Johnson was born October 18, 1917, to Olaf and Matilda (Melby) Johnson in Melvin, IA. Elva was raised in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 1935. She married Delmer Witt on July 3, 1941 at Pipestone, MN. They farmed NW of Madison for 51 years before moving into Madison. Elva and Delmer owned and operated the Sears store until 1973 when she began working as a bookkeeper for Terra Western in Madison. Elva retired in 1993.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Madison, the Red Cross Board, Gray Ladies, Hospital Auxilliary, BPW where she was Women of the Year and received the Jefferson Award in 1991 at Washington D.C. Elva was also a member of card club, the Ramona Cemetery Board, and the Graceland Cemetery Board where she served as president for over 20 years. Elva loved animals.
Survivors include, several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and special friend Bertie Thompson of Madison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Delmer in 2002; two brothers, Art Johnson and Clarence Johnson; and two sisters, Goldie Spawn and Lila Costlow.
