Susan Kay Soma

Susan Kay Soma, age 74, of Oldham, SD, passed away Sat., Nov. 18, 2023, at her home due to heart failure. She was a woman of simple joys and enduring love. Services will be 10:30 am, Wed., Nov. 22, at Oldham Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Tuesday, at the church with a Prayer Service at 6 pm. Burial will be at Oldham Lutheran Cemetery. 

Susan Kay Bickett was born to Stanley and Donna (Johnson) Bickett on July 24, 1949, at Ramona, SD.
Susan’s roots in faith were at the Oldham Methodist Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She graduated from Oldham High School in 1968 and continued her education at Dakota State in Madison, earning an Associate Arts degree in 1970.

She married Rick Soma on August 5, 1972, at the Oldham Lutheran Church, Susan spent some time in Sioux Falls, working and making a life for herself. The couple then moved to Draper, South Dakota, where she worked as a teacher’s aide at Draper Elementary School and welcomed two children, David and Jennifer.

Returning to her family farm west of Oldham, Susan focused on raising her family. After her kids grew up, she worked at Wenks in Madison and later as a dietary aide at Bethel Lutheran Home until her retirement in 2010. She loved the simple pleasures of holidays, family gatherings, and attending her grandchildren’s activities. She enjoyed dining out and cherished the company of her pets.

Susan is survived by her husband of 51 years, Rick; her son David (Kori), of Chino Valley, AZ, daughter Jennifer (Brandon) Riedel of Madison, SD, and six grandchildren: Salem, Trace, Nona, Dakota, Collin, and Brookelyn. She is also remembered by her brother, Mike (Connie) Bickett of Oldham, her mother-in-law, Marian Soma of Howard, SD, sister-in-laws Shari (Scott) Lee of Alexandria, MN, Margie Soma of Madison, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Donna Bickett, and brothers Paul and Terry, father-in-law Richard Soma, brothers- in-law Darwin Soma and Jeff Wittrock.

In remembering Susan, we honor the warmth she brought into our lives and the memories that will live on. May she rest in peace.
