Leora L Schmitz

Leora Schmitz, age 96, of Mankato, MN, died Feb. 10, 2011, at Sunrise Cottages, Mankato. Leora LaVera Pooley was born May 10, 1914, in rural Miner County, to Roy and Vida (Nicodemus) Pooley. She was raised on the family farm in Miner County and attended country school and the Fedora school. She was married to Alfred Schmitz for 33 years and he passed away in 1998. Leora worked as a welding inspector at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, CA during World War II. Later she was the kitchen manager at the Sepulveda, CA Veterans Hospital and retired in 1975. Leora was a longtime member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Bullhead City, AZ, the local Elks and Moose Clubs, and the Good Sam’s Camping Club. In her later years, she volunteered at the Bullhead City Hospital and after moving to Mankato she volunteered at the Blue Earth County Historical Society. PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband; three brothers, Clifford, Wilbur, and Roy Jr.; and two sisters, LaVerna and Della. SURVIVORS: include three daughters, Donna Webb of Mankato, MN, Dixie Baldwin of Coeur d’Alene, ID and Dianne McComb, Hayden, ID; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother Lester Pooley and one sister Wilma Thompson, both of Madison.
