Richard A. Phelps

Richard A. Phelps, age 89, of Madison, SD, died Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at his residence in Madison. Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Colman Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday with the family present from 5-7 PM at the Ellsworth Funeral Home.

Richard Allen Phelps was born February 6, 1928 to Donald and Hazel (Anderson) Phelps at Wenthworth, SD. After he turned 10 years old, Richard was raised by Otto (Sophie) Aukschun near Rutland. After graduating from Rutland High School, Richard served in the U.S. Army Co. I 196th Regimental Team at Camp Carson, CO, and Fort Richardson, AK. Richard married Janice French on April 3, 1954 in Worthington, MN. He farmed near Rutland before working for Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Lake County Soil Conservation Service in Madison.

Preceding him in death are his parents; 4 brothers, Ronald, Dale, Eddie, and Harold Phelps; and 2 sisters, Mary Peterson, and Arlys Stanford.

Survivors include his wife Janice of Madison; 2 brothers, Darrell (Linda) Phelps of Lake Madison, and Thomas (Joan) Phelps of Sioux Falls; 2 sisters, JoAnn McNeil of Ramona, CA, and Nancy (Larry) Chase of Sioux Falls; 2 sisters-in-law, Darlene Phelps of Colman, and Judy Sona of Pt. Charlotte, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
