Janice Leighton, age 83, of Madison, died Monday, June 15, 2020, at her residence. Per her request, no services will be held.
Janice Helene (Carter) Leighton was born December 21, 1936, at Carthage, South Dakota, to Fritz and Bilda (Van Scharrel) Carter. She was raised on a farm near Carthage before moving to Madison in 1949 where she graduated from Madison High School. She married Harold Leighton on October 24, 1954. They lived in Madison for a short time before moving to Reseda, California, where Janice worked as a telephone operator. In the summer of 1971, they moved to a farm west of Junius.
Janice was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and basketball. She was the fun mom on the block in California and all the kids loved playing at her house.
Janice died peacefully at home surrounded by her husband of 65 years and her children following a two month battle with AL Amyloidsis, a rare kidney disease. One of her doctors said ‘she faced a difficult diagnosis with grace and courage.’
Janice was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Those grateful for sharing her life include her husband, Harold; three sons, Jeff (Grace) Leighton of West Hills, California; Kevin (Sandi) Leighton and Clay (Jarri) Leighton of Madison, South Dakota; and one daughter, Kerri (Dan) LaFever of Boise, Idaho; 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and one brother, Jerry Carter of Colorado.
