Margaret Kuhl Obituary

Margaret Kuhl, age 97, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday,  October 24, 2023 at her home. A Celebration of Margaret's life and Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023 at 11:00am, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, SD.  Visitation with family present will be held on Sunday, October 29, at 5-7pm, at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. SD.   She had enjoyed many years of good health until recently, when she was receiving care for heart issues.  Everyone who knew Margaret will tell you she was a Special woman - with her gentle cheerful face and caring smile, and was always generous with her great warmth, kindness, caring ways, many smiles, much love, and kind words.  She was beloved by all who knew her.

Margaret Ann DeRuiter was born April 29, 1926 to Gilbert and Louise (VanDerWerf) DeRuiter in Doon, Iowa, as the second of four children, and attended school in Doon. Margaret met the love of her life, Leo Kuhl, while still living in Iowa. They were united in marriage on October 17, 1946, and made their first home in Iowa.  After deciding to move to South Dakota, they lived on a farm north of Madison, and later moved to a farm south of Madison, where they farmed and raised their three children.  Margaret and Leo later moved into Madison to be closer to family and friends, and community services.  Margaret is a former member of the First Reformed Church in Colton, SD, and now a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison.

Margaret was the heart and center of the family.  She loved spending time with her family and found happiness in watching her children and grandchildren grow into adults with their own families.  She enjoyed talking about times from the past and their shared experiences as a family. Those times and memories will live on forever in the hearts of those who love Margaret.

Margaret's friends have always been a source of great joy.  With Margaret's warmth and generous spirit, she has made many great friends wherever she lived and worked.  In addition to the job she loved most as farm wife and mom,  Margaret also worked a full time job, as dietary aide at Golden Living Center, formerly Beverly Healthcare in Madison, for many years until her retirement.

Those grateful for sharing her life include her three children, one daughter, Phyllis (Jerry) Cizadlo of Wentworth; two sons, Gary (Valerie) also of Wentworth; and Norman (Kaylene) of Salem, SD; 6 grandchildren (Anne, Jason, Brian, Kristin, David, and Aaron); and 8 great grandchildren; her sister Faye Gort of Rock Valley, IA; sister-in-law Eileen (DeRuiter) Holmes of Pella, IA; several "favorite" nieces and nephews; close cousins -  twin brothers,  Dean (Mary) VanDerWerf and his brother Gene; and many "special" friends gained over the years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo in 2010; great grand daughter, Chelsie; her two brothers, Gilbert and Jim DeRuiter; brother-in-law Carl Kuhl and sisters-in-law Clara Ann Olson and Darlene Folkens.
