To the Johnson family I wish to extend my deepest condolences on Mr. Johnson's tragic passing.
I first met Mr. Johnson during the summer of 1977 at the Madison city pool & I will admit we didn't hit it off.
I was a mouthy brash 17 year old & he was a no nonesense man who wouldn't tolerate any back talk.
When I enrolled in MHS in the fall of 77 I was less than enthused to see that my English teacher was "Stormin Norman"! LOL!
He remembered me all to well from the swimming pool so I knew that there would be no slacking in his class.
Although it was hard for me to realize it at that time, over the years his strictness is exactly what I needed in my life at that time.
Even after 35 years the memories of the time spent in his class for the few months I was there are still engrained in my memory as if they happened only a short time ago.
I believe the gift that we can give to Mr. Johnson is to continue his mission of being a positive role model & influence on the lives of the youngsters we may come across in our lives.
I grieve for you in that you had to lose this fine man in such a tragic way, but I also thank GOD that he gave Norman to you & the world, & for the positive influence he made in so many peoples lives.
May the LORD who holds us & keeps us envelop you in with his love & mercy today & everyday until we are brought together again with those who have passed on before us & are in his care now.
In CHRISTS love

Dear Barb & family,

So sorry to hear of Norm's passing.  He was a long time customer of ours and Ben loved coming to tune Norm's piano and visiting with him.  We always allowed extra time for his tunings so they could visit. When our daughter and Andie played hockey against each other, Norm and Ben had even more to talk about.  Death is always hardest on those left behind.  My you find comfort in Christ and know that Norm is at peace with Him.
With Sympathy,

To the family of Mr. Norm Johnson-

Mr. Johnson touched so many of us. He was a well liked, all around good person. I remember him from the pool, to painting, to being my freshman English teacher. Thank you for sharing such an wonderful person with us. He helped mold so many kids into responsible adults.

To the Johnson Family,

I am deeply saddened to hear about Norman''s passing. I had him as my freshman composition teacher in 1989. I came from a single parent family, and was heading down the wrong road, and Mr. Johnson, as I called him then, took me under his wing. Now, Norman didn''t baby me in any way, as a matter of fact he was hard on me and pushed me. At first I despised him for it, but eventually I came around and understood what he was trying to do. It was exactly what I needed at that time. He is one of those few people that stand out in my mind that taught me how to be a man.
Apathy was a word that Norman tended to use quite often when he thought students were being lazy, and was truly a naughty word in his book. These days I work with Army evaluations and awards, and I will tell you that there are quite a few Soldiers that should have had Norman as their teacher. Needless to say, I have adopted Norman''s bad word and like to incorporate it into emails that I send to Soldiers when I kick evaluations back for corrections. Many of them get very angry with me, but like Norman taught me, I strive to push my brothers in arms to put more effort in what they write. It is kind of funny thinking back, because I never thought I would be using much writing skills in my adult life, boy was I wrong.
I usually take leave and visit Madison about once a year, and would usually make it a point to stop into the hardware store to say hello to Norman. He was very fun to talk to and I think he just enjoyed talking to people and see what they''re up to now days.
Norman is and always will be a major and positive influence and role model in my life, and will be truly missed. He was a good man and from what I''ve read has been a positive influence for many others. My only regret is not telling him straight out what a role model he was for me. I am deeply sorry for your loss and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,
Dustin G. Drew

Barb, Teri and Beth,
It's difficult to find the right words for you in a time like this.  Just please know that my wife and I are praying for you and the rest of your family - for healing and peace.
I know it's impossible to rationalize this tragedy, to try to figure out how and why it happened.  In these moments, about all we can do is lean on God's promise that he will never leave us or forsake us.
May God wrap his arms around you and comfort you so that you can feel his love more than you ever have.
It will be impossible for me and the rest my siblings to forget Norm.  All of us have nothing but great memories of him!

Dear Barb, Terry, Beth and families,
The days since hearing of the tragic death of your dear husband and father
I just can''t get you off my mind.  Words are impossible to express the grief you are feeling today.  You are in my thoughts and prayers as it is nearing the time of the memorial service and I will be praying for strength that only our heavenly father can give you at this time.  A scriptures that comes to mind is Isaiah 40:3l says, But  they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and  they shall walk and not faint.  Isaiah 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
May Gods peace be with you today and always.

To Barb and family. I was lucky enough to have Norm for a teacher at Washington grade school and again in high school. He was a gifted teacher who pushed his students to do their best. He was one of my favorites. My mother was a teaching colleague with Norm for many years and had great respect for him, as did I.
I am so sorry.

Barb, Terri, Beth & Families,

You always have that one teacher that stands out and whenever you are asked to recall what one teacher influenced you the most in your life; the first person that always came to my mind was Mr. Johnson.  As a student I am sure I looked at things differently, but after having my own children, I realize what a difference a very good teacher can make in a child’s life.  That would have been your husband/father.  He touched so many lives in such a positive way and he will be greatly missed.  My prayers are with you and may God give you comfort in this difficult time.

Barb, Terry, Beth and families,

I cannot express how Norm changed my life. He asked me to work for him at the pool when I was in eighth grade, beginning as a basket worker and finally becoming a guard. Norm's example taught me how to take responsibity for decisions made and then to back up those decisions with confidence.  He started out as my boss and later in life when we were both coaching track became my friend.  He loved what he did and always gave that little extra.  But as much as he loved teaching and coaching he always thought his biggest accomplishment was his wife -kids and grand kids.  Everytime we ran into each other he had stories about those grand kids and telling the story with the biggest smile.  He will be missed but never forgotten.  You will be in my prayers during this most difficult time.  Carol

Dear Barb and Family,

I am reminded too vividly of my husband''''s passing (Bill Forman) .  It seems as if it was yesterday after reading about Norm.  I really don''''t know ANYTHING that Norm ever did that wasn''''t great.  He was a true "People" person like his Dad.  I can relate to you that right now you must feel as if this is the end of the world.  Time really does have a way of easing your grief. Your life will never be the same, but the pain will ease and you will be able to go past this.  Memories keep running through my head about Norm and band and choir and helping him with his bookkeeping LOL.
You are in my prayers.  I wish you peace, understanding and happy memories.

Prayfully,

To the family of Mr. Norm Johnson.

It is with a heavy heart and my sincerest sympathies that I am sending to you my condolences for the loss our your husband/father.

I am a 1968 graduate of Madison High, and I remember so well the teachings of Mr. Johnson in my English class.  He was by far my FAVORITE teacher in high school, and he encouraged and instilled in me a love of reading.  His kind and encouraging manner motivated me and peaked my interest in a subject that I never thought I would enjoy.  Having lived on the same street as your family (NE 6th), I often was asked to babysit for the young children on several occasions, and it was always one of my favorite jobs.  I remember that the children were always very well behaved.  With that said, I am very saddened that his life was taken at this very young age.

Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family.  God bless you now and always.

Sincerely,

Mary L. (Byrd) Seiler

Norm Johnson was a "tough as nails" teacher, but we liked him for it. We tried to goof off and drive him crazy, but he didn't put up with it. He was determined we would learn something. I am reminded how he influenced my life as I thought about him over the past days. Sudden, senseless loss is the worst kind. We are praying for his family as they start their journey through grief. Once I tried to tell Mr. Johnson that I thought that he was the best high school teacher I had and taught at a college level.  He shrugged my compliment off.  He taught not for the recognition, but for the purest reason--to instruct kids.  He was a marvelous teacher and a wonderful human being.  I am a better person, and was a more successful writer and student, because he was my teacher.

Barb, Terri, and Beth:  Words cannot express the sadness I am feeling for your family at this terrible time.  What a senseless tragedy that is so difficult to comprehend right now.  I am asking God to blanket your family with peace and faith.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family in this very difficult time.  I remember Mr. Johnson as a teacher and have seen him often singing in the adult choir at Trinity Luthern Church.  He will be greatly missed in this community.

To Barb and the rest of Norm Johnson''s family,
I want to express my family''s sympathy and mine as well. He was such a great man, coach, friend, and he always wanted to talk to you. I got to know him thoughout my life and my parents had him as a teacher. I know how it feels to loose someone but, God always said that dying was a part of life. This tragic occurence should''ve never happened but, it did. We will always remeber Norm and if you ever need anything, just let us know. We do have a guest room, if a part of ur family would rather sleep in a bed rather than a hotel.

Sincerely,
Andy and the rest of the Hunter Family
