Francis “Frank” Becker, age 79, of Madison, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at his daughter’s residence under hospice care.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Church of the Nazarene, Madison. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery with Military Honors by Madison American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Friday with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Ellsworth Funeral Home and continues one hour prior to the service at the church.
Francis Becker was born December 28, 1937, on the family farm north of Madison, to Helmuth and Anna (Uthe) Becker. He graduated from General Beadle High School in 1956 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed several places around the world, ending up in Alaska. He married Opal Hammer on December 10, 1961, at Kenai, Alaska.
Frank worked as a mail carrier in California, later trained as a mechanic, and even more training to become an electronic technician for the U.S. Postal Service. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1983 and moved to Madison in 1995 when he retired. Frank was a school crossing guard for many years and the entire family had newspaper routes with Madison Daily Leader since 1999.
Frank was a member of Church of the Nazarene, Madison VFW and Madison American Legion where he served in the Honor Guard and was Chaplain for many years. He received the Missionary Distinguished Service Award and volunteered for 60’s Plus Dining for many years.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Marvin; and one great granddaughter Caelynn.
Survivors include his wife Opal of Madison; two children, Alan (Vickie) Becker of Oklahoma City, OK and Mary (Darrell) Becker of Madison; four grandchildren, Christina Mapp, Daryl Becker, Jessica (Steve) Thiesen and Amber Becker; five step-grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several step-great grandchildren.
